Simplified or Traditional Chinese?

Some of our clients are quite confused about the differences between simplified and traditional Chinese. They are basically two forms of written Chinese that differ mainly in their characters and writing styles. Here’s a breakdown of the key differences between them:

(1) Usage:

  • Simplified Chinese: Simplified Chinese is primarily used in mainland China and Singapore. It is the official script used in mainland China for government documents, publications, and education.

  • Traditional Chinese: Traditional Chinese is used in regions such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and by overseas Chinese communities. It is the official script in Taiwan and is widely used in Hong Kong and Macau.

    (2) Historical Context:

  • Simplified Chinese: Simplification of Chinese characters began in the early 20th century as part of efforts to improve literacy rates in China. It was further promoted by language reforms in mainland China in the 1950s and 1960s.

  • Traditional Chinese: Traditional Chinese characters have a long history and have been used for thousands of years. They have evolved over time but have maintained their complexity and form in regions that continue to use them.

However, there are slight differences in terminology usage between all the mentioned countries and regions, so it is advisable to know the specific region when you request translation.
